Madison Fueger surpassed 20 points for the fourth time this season and SMWC pulled away in the second half for a 79-56 River States Conference victory over Indiana Southeast on Tuesday in Hamilton Arena.
The Pomeroys (6-3, 2-0 RSC) are off to a 2-0 start in the RSC for the first time in three seasons in the league. The Pomeroys held the Grenadiers to 3 of 17 from the field in the third quarter to extend a 7-point halftime lead to 23, closing the third quarter on a 13-0 run. The Pomeroys also forced five turnovers in the period and finished with 22 points off turnovers overall.Â
Feuger finished with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field.
Irye Gomez added 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Abby Worley had seven points and eight assists, leading the Pomeroys to more than 20 assists for the fourth time this season.
Gomez hit back-to-back 3-pointers to break a 6-6 tie near the midpoint of the first quarter, and the Pomeroys' lead grew to double figures by the 3:19 mark of the period after a jumper by Jones and a layup by
Madison White.
The Grenadiers clawed to within 34-28 with an 8-2 spurt late in the second quarter and went into halftime with hopes of making it a game in the second half.
The Pomeroys quickly got back to work in the third quarter. Fueger and
Allyson Hardiek scored the first four points of the period and a 3-pointer by Worley got the lead back to double figures, 44-33, just two minutes into the second half.
The Pomeroys' 13-0 run included a pair of buckets by White, five points from Gomez and a jumper by
Kylee Stepp.
SMWC is now outscoring opponents 210 to 142 in the third quarter. Coach
Terry Bowe praised his team for making halftime adjustments.
"I would like to see us off to better starts, but we are making in-game adjustments and producing more from actual game action vs. film," Bowe said. Â
The Pomeroys' lead grew to as much as 30, 77-47, on the second of two 3-pointers by freshman
Talyssa Moody.
SMWC returns to action Dec. 15 at Midway. The Pomeroys will look to keep pace with Oakland City atop the division in the RSC West.
