RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team drained a total of nine 3-pointers and used a fierce defensive effort to take down previously unbeaten Lindsay Wilson (Ky.) by the score of 67-53 in the opener of the Bevo Francis Classic hosted by Rio Grande (Ohio).
SMWC improved to 6-1 on the season while Lindsey Wilson fell to 6-1. The Pomeroys will take on Governors State on Saturday (Nov. 23) on the final day of the Bevo Francis Classic. Tip-off is set for 1 pm (ET).
Aubrey Burgess led the way for the Pomeroys with 18 points as she hit both of her 3-point attempts in the game.
Madison Fueger and
Destiny Thomas each scored 13 while
Brooklynn Jones added 10. Fueger was a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point distance in the contest. As a team, the Pomeroys connected on 9-of-18 (50 percent) of their shots from distance in the contest.
Defense carried the day for SMWC as they held Lindsey Wilson to under 40 percent shooting and they were just 1-of-8 from 3-point range in the contest. The Pomeroys created 17 turnovers and turned them into 14 points while their 10 offensive rebounds turned into 10 second chance points.
Jones was the leading rebounder for SMWC with five rebounds while Iyre Gomez, Burgess and Fueger added four each. Fueger added three blocked shots and Jones was credited with a trio of steals.
Lindsey Wilson would lead by as many as seven points in the first quarter but consecutive baskets from
Destiny Thomas and Burgess cut the deficit down to just 16-14 after the first 10 minutes of play. Thomas converted a lay-up with 7:47 left before halftime for a 19-18 lead. The two teams went back-and-forth until Fueger drained a triple as the clock ticked under the five minute mark for the 28-25 advantage. It was part of a game-changing 10-0 run before the half which was capped by another Fueger trifecta and the Pomeroys led 33-25. SMWC would own a 35-31 cushion at the half.
Fueger drained her third 3-pointer of the contest less than a minute into the third quarter for a 38-31 lead and Burgess would cap a 7-0 run to begin the second half for a 42-31 lead just over two minutes in. With 4:41 left,
Diamond Bryant drilled a 3-pointer to cap another long run and the Pomeroys led 51-33. Lindsey Wilson would get within 12 late but Thomas lay-up with seven seconds left gave the Pomeroys a 67-53 win.
