The SMWC women's basketball team extended its winning streak to its largest of the season Saturday, defeating Midway by a score of 86-74 on Saturday inside Hamilton Arena.
The Pomeroys are looking to jockey for position heading into RSC Tournament play and could get as high as the No. 3 seed.
"We're playing well at the right time," coach
Terry Bowe said. "The team is rallying around the ability to play for a second season. The leadership on the defensive end was great."
The Pomeroys were steady throughout, taking a 22-14 lead after the first quarter as
Madison Fueger had six points and
Destiny Thomas five.
Haley Polston chippped in four off the bench, coming up big after
Allyson Hardiek picked up two early fouls. Polston would play a season-high 19 minutes and get a season-best eight points, making 4 of 7 from the field.
Bowe's squad got another key jolt from the bench in the second quarter as
Kylee Stepp knocked down 5-of-5 free throws and a 3-pointer to lead the team with eight points in the period.
"I'm super proud of the team for the win today," junior
Madison Fueger said. "We battled some early foul trouble and our bench stepped up tremendously, right when we needed them."
Fueger was also 12 of 12 at the free-throw line for the fourth-best single-game performance in school history.
"I'm super excited we we broke the three-game winning streak and we just need to keep adding onto it going into the postseason," Fueger said.
Irye Gomez, who would finish with a team-high 18 points, hit her second 3-pointer in the period.
After leading 42-34 at halftme, the Pomeroys pulled away in the third quarter. behind seven more from Gomez.
Destiny Thomas was a spark as usual with two points, three assists and two steals in the period on her way to a 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two-steal performance.
Eight diffrerent Pomeroys scored in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
Hardiek, who finished with five blocked shots, had four of those in the second half to help SMWC hold Midway to 12 of 36 shooting (33.3 percent) in the second half. Polston also added a blocked shot.
"Al and Haley both played great," Bowe said of his post players.
FUEGER REACHES 1,000
Fueger, averaging 14 points this season, finished with 14 on Saturday. The junior college transfer scored 672 at Lakeland and now has 337 for SMWC, giving her 1,009 for her college career.
"Passing 1,000 was a big milestone and I'm very grateful to have been able to reach hit here at SMWC with the teammates I have supporting me," Fueger said.

Hardiek will celebrate Senior Night on Tuesday in her final regular-season home game. The Pomeroys lone senior is the record holder for career blocked shots, single-season blocked shots and single-game blocks.
