Box Score 2 TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team split its doubleheader with Ashford University on Saturday. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at SMWC, however, due to field conditions the games were moved to Terre Haute South High School. The Pomeroys fell in game one before coming back strong to take game two.
GAME 1 (AU 3, SMWC 0)
The Pomeroys struggled in game one, recording just three hits. Senior Brooke Jordan also tasted defeat for the first time this season. She is now 5-1 in 2015.
SMWC had its chances in game one with Ashford spreading its scoring out and leaving hope for the Pomeroys. AU scored one run in the top of the third, fifth and seventh innings. Recording hits in game one were sophomore Emma Riffe in the third and sixth innings and junior Kimberly Strattman in the fifth, however all three times they were left stranded on the base paths. SMWC fell 3-0.
GAME 2 (SMWC 10, AU 3)
The Pomeroys came alive in the second game, recording 10 runs on 10 hits, while freshman Stephanie Richardson picked up her fourth win of the season. Freshman Marlee Yeager did the most damage at the plate going 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI's.
AU scored one run in the top of the first, but the Pomeroys had a big answer in the bottom of the second with four runs. This scoring spree in the second was capped with a two-run double by junior Sarah Burnham that gave SMWC the 4-1 lead.
The Pomeroys had another big inning in the bottom of the fourth, as they brought in four more runs to take an 8-3 lead. This time the scoring was capped by a three-run double by Yeager.
The Pomeroys added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth off of an RBI double by Yeager and an RBI single by junior Breanna Lange.
The Pomeroys 10-3 victory over the Saints moves their overall record to 15-5 on the year. SMWC is scheduled to be back in action on March 30, when they head to IU-Southeast.
