Saint Mary-of-the-Woods

Club Sports

Club sports at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College provide a rich campus life experience for students in a team and individual sport competitive atmosphere. In addition to the sheer fun of the sport or the excitement of competition, a student can gain important life skills in leadership, competition, organization, goal setting and other transferable skills.

Each sport is guided by a head coach or instructorSome clubs may require try-outs for participation while others may have open membership.

SMWC currently offers six club sports: eSports, competitive cheer, cycling, dance, powerlifting, and rowing.

eSports

The SMWC eSports and Gaming Club is a vibrant and welcoming community of casual and competitive video gamers. The club prides itself on being a competitive, yet, relaxed environment for gaming enthusiasts of all levels. An eSports participant can hone on their independent competitive skills in preparation for tournaments within the club and against other collegiate teams.

Powerlifting

The SMWC Powerlifting Club provides an on-campus community resource for powerlifters and strength athletes looking to train, compete and foster a culture of competition and strength at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

Powerlifting allows competitors to compete in three lifts: squat, bench press and deadlift. In competition, members make three attempts in each lift, and the highest attempts are added together to create a combined total. Ranking in a meet is based upon this combined total and the competitor with the highest total is declared the winner in each weight class. In the event of two or more competitors achieving the same total, the competitor with the lightest bodyweight is declared the winner. There are two divisions: equipped or raw. Equipped lifting consists of using a single-ply squat suit, bench shirt and deadlift suit during competition. Knee wraps are also allowed along with wrists wraps. Raw lifting consists of only a singlet and wrist wraps.

SMWC Powerlifters will go to one sanctioned National Collegiate Meet each spring and compete against other powerlifters from schools across the nation.

Rowing

The SMWC Rowing Club Team is a unique opportunity for students of all skill levels to get active and involved on campus. Regattas (competitions) are held throughout the Midwest and provide a great experience for competing against other collegiate teams. Everyone has a purpose and plays a crucial role in the success of the team. This paves the way for friendships and the development of self-motivation skills along with physical and mental endurance. In the winter months, practices will be held at the Terre Haute YMCA consisting mainly of indoor workouts on an erg (rowing machine). As spring approaches, workouts will be transitioned to rowing on the Wabash River.
