Pomeroys Split with Ave Maria to Start 2015 Campaign

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods softball team split its first doubleheader of the 2015 season with Ave Maria on Sunday. The Pomeroys took game one, 2-0, before coming up just shy in game 2, 6-5. Sunday's doubleheader was the first of a five-day, 10-game trip to Florida.

GAME 1 (SMWC 2, Ave Maria 0)

Game one was a pitching duel with senior Brooke Jordan going the first five innings and allowing just three hits. Both sides remained off the scoreboard for the first four innings, but in the top of the fifth that changed for the Pomeroys. Junior Kimberly Strattman singled to shortstop and ultimately stole second. With two outs, junior Sarah Burnham stepped into the box and was able to reach first on a throwing error, which also allowed Strattman to score the first Pomeroy run of the season.

Burnham would step into the circle for the final two innings and would get the same results as Jordan. She gave up three hits and struck out four batters, as did Jordan. The Pomeroys picked up one insurance run in the top of the seventh when freshman Stephanie Richardson scored after freshman Kerri Schrock was hit by a pitch.

At the plate, Strattman went 2-for-3 and scored one run. Freshman Marlee Yeager went 2-for-4, while freshman Jacklyn McClain and Richardson made the most of their only at bats going 1-for-1.

GAME 2 (SMWC 5, Ave Maria 6)

Game two saw Ave Maria come out on top, but it was no easy task, as the Pomeroys scored four runs in the final three innings to make things interesting.

Ave Maria scored two runs in the first and two runs in the second, while SMWC answered with just one run in the bottom of the first. Burnham started off the bottom of the first by reaching first base on an error by the first baseman. Burnham would end up scoring after being moved to third by a ground out by Schrock and sacrifice bunt by Yeager. Jordan then singled to shortstop to score Burnham.

The Pomeroys would give up another run to Ave Maria in the top of the fourth, and then trailing 5-1 SMWC would put up some runs to get back in the game. The Pomeroys scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-3 in favor of Ave Maria. Schrock reached first on a single to left field and then with one swing of the bat Yeager homered down the left field line to give SMWC its two runs in the fifth.

Ave Maria would answer in the sixth with a run of their own, but SMWC would also score a run off of a ground out RBI by Burnham that scored junior Rebecca Latta. The Pomeroys then went into the bottom of the seventh trailing 6-4. Senior Shelby Turner started off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left field. She then moved to third after a ground out by sophomore Breanna Lange. Latta then hit an RBI ground out to short stop that pulled SMWC within one with two outs. With those two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Pomeroys needed one run to tie it up or two runs to win. Richardson would walk and sophomore Ciara McClain would double to right center. Now with two runners in scoring position, Burnham was at the plate. However, she would fly out to center field to end SMWC's comeback dreams.

The Pomeroys finished game two with eight hits by eight different players and five runs by five different players. Burnham finished four innings in the circle giving up five runs on five hits. Richardson went the final three innings, allowing one run on one hit.

SMWC will be back in action on Monday when they face Penn State-Hazleton and Bloomfield in Titusville, Fla.
