Pomeroys Win Fourth-Straight, Sweep Bearcats

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The #1-ranked Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team swept Brescia on Sunday to improve to 20-8 on the year. With Sunday's wins, the Pomeroys have now won four games in a row and have tallied four sweeps on the year.

GAME 1 (SMWC 9, BU 4)

The Pomeroys were able to take game one with a big second inning. SMWC headed into the top of the second inning tied 1-1 with the Bearcats after an RBI single by senior Brooke Jordan scored junior Sarah Burnham.

The second inning saw the Pomeroys record six hits and six runs with sophomore Breanna Lange, freshman Marlee Yeager, Burnham, freshman Kerri Schrock, Jordan and senior Shelby Turner all crossing home plate.

The Pomeroys then followed up with another run in the third to move their lead to 8-1. This time it was sophomore Emma Riffe scoring off of an RBI single by Turner. Brescia would answer with one run in the fourth and one run in the fifth to make it 8-3 heading into the seventh. Freshman Kelly Combs scored an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by junior Rebecca Latta, and the Bearcats answered with just one run to give SMWC the 9-4 victory.

Jordan went the distance to pick up her eighth win of the season. She struck out five batters in seven innings of work.

GAME 2 (SMWC 5, BU 1)

The Pomeroys secured their fourth sweep of the season with a 5-1 victory in game two on Sunday. Burnham scored in the first inning off of an RBI single by Schrock. SMWC's early 1-0 lead was extended to 3-0 in the top of the second when Burnham hit her seventh home run of the year and scored Riffe.

The Bearcats answered with their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second, while the Pomeroys added one run in the third and one run on the fifth. Freshman Stephanie Richardson picked up her fifth win of the season. She struck out two batters and allowed four hits in seven innings of work.

The Pomeroys will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host Missouri Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with LIVE stats and video available in the Pomeroys LIVE Portal.
