Pomeroys Notch First Program Win Behind Ramirez-Vazquez's 37 Points

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The SMWC Men's Basketball team (1-1) earned the first victory in program history Wednesday night, defeating the Maple Leafs of Goshen College (Ind.) by a score of 84-82. The Pomeroys were led by Elkin Ramirez-Vazquez, who poured in 37 points on an incredible 81% (13-16) from the field and 80% (8-10) from 3-point range. Freshman Jadyn McHugh also had a solid night, adding 16 points and 7 assists.

How It Happened
  • First Half: The Pomeroys got out to a 6-0 lead in the blink of an eye from two Elkin Ramirez-Vazquez three pointers. But the Maple Leafs quickly regrouped and evened the score at 17 at the midway point of the first half. The Maple Leafs would go on a run and take an 8-point lead in the closing minutes of the first half, but the Pomeroys ended the first half on a strong note with three pointers from Jamarius Evans and again from Ramirez-Vazquez to cut the lead to two at the break.
  • Second Half: The Pomeroy offense caught fire to start the second half, with two more three pointers from Ramirez-Vazquez and some hard-fought points in the paint from Jadyn McHugh and the Pomeroys took a 64-54 lead midway through the second half. But the Maple Leaves would respond with a furious rally and took a 1-point lead with under a minute remaining in the game. But like they were all game, the Pomeroys remained cool, calm, and collected and Ramirez-Vazquez hit Isaiah Sims in the corner for three with 15 seconds left and the Pomeroys were able to hold on for the victory.

On earning the first win in program history and the improvement from the team…
"I'm so happy for the team and that the pressure is off of them (after earning the first win in program history). They've worked hard for a year, and now into our second year and I wanted a win so badly for them tonight, because they've been putting in so much hard work.
We had to do some things differently compared to Saturday, we kind of got exposed and we didn't do the little things. But we made sure to concentrate on the little things, still boxing out and setting screens like we're supposed to, but we focused on those little things and we played together much better tonight."

On his stellar night and how the team came together to get the win…

"It was a good team effort for our first win of the season. It's always good to get the first win. The game was closer than we liked it to be, we were up late with a big lead and we kind of let it go a little bit, but we made it interesting for the home crowd. It was a great team effort, everybody contributed and did what we had to do to get a win."

Quote | Isaiah Sims
On how the team can keep this momentum rolling…

"Tonight we had great team defense, great energy during the game, and we just need to keep it going throughout the season."

Next Up
The Pomeroys travel to St. Louis, Missouri to take on The University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis on Saturday, November 6 in their first road test of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
