Saint Mary-of-the-Woods sprint football didn't need a come-from-behind effort or a grind-it-out defensive effort Saturday at Jay Barrett Field.
The Pomeroys had the strong right arm of quarterback Brennon Landry (New Iberia, La./Westgate) to showcase for a 48-22 Homecoming victory.
Landry dropped in deep passes to his speedy wide receivers, nearly put three wide receivers over 100 yards receiving and helped lead the SMWC offense to 547 total yards.
Landry finished 19 for 34 for 435 yards and four touchdowns through the air and ran for two scores. Jaheem Joseph (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) caught six passes for 175 yards and three TDs. Joseph's 66-yarder with 30 seconds left in the first quarter put the Pomeroys ahead 14-8, and the Pomeroys' offense was just getting started.
"He's basically my best friend. We're always together off the field. It just transfers to the field and we just work every day," Landry said amid the post-game celebration.
On the ensuing Midway possession after Joseph's first score, Monte May (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) picked off a pass by Midway's D.J. Palmer.
Five plays later, Landry connected with Devron Johnson (Glen Burnie, Md./Mt. Hebron) for a 79-yard pass down the sideline at the 12:58 mark of the second quarter.
The Pomeroys knew their receivers would likely see man-to-man coverage on the outside.
"The plan was to take advantage of the one-on-ones," Landry said. "Very impressive [for the offense]. We've got some talented guys. It's just building some chemistry."
Joseph caught his first TD of the season last week against Quincy and felt poised for a breakout going into Saturday.
"I wanted to step it up this week and show the fans and my teammates what I can do on Saturdays. They weren't expecting my quickness, I guess," Joseph said.
Johnson finished with 117 yards receiving. Corbyn Cleveland (Missouri City, Texas/Columbus) chipped in five catches for 88 yards.
Running back Patrick Perea (Amarillo, Texas/Randall) rushed 27 times for 97 yards, drawing praise from head coach Blaine Powell.
"You've got to take your hat off to Patty. He was a hammer," Powell said. "Proud of our offensive line. In this league, running the ball is the hardest thing because you do have a lot of guys that have never played [offensive line] before. But our guys just keep getting better and better."
Defensively, SMWC held Midway to 278 yards and forced four turnovers.
Unofficially, Jake Skinner (Sullivan, Ind./Sullivan) had nine tackles, an interception and ½ a sack. While the Pomeroys had just two sacks, they pressured the Midway quarterbacks into rushed throws and allowed their defensive backs to make plays.
SMWC has a bye week next weekend before hitting the road to play at Bellarmine on Oct. 15.
The Pomeroys have a chance to get stronger with wide receivers Andrece Miller (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South) and Kyle Vernelson (Sullivan, Ind./Sullivan) potentially returning along with running back Kerry Lacey (Little Elm, Texas/Braswell).
"We were ready for this [upcoming] bye. It gives us a chance to catch our breath a little bit. We've been going so hard at it for six or seven weeks now. It'll be good to slow down and look at some film and get ourselves prepared for a really good Bellarmine team."
