The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men's soccer team put together a solid 90-minute effort in all phases of the game Saturday to secure a 3-0 win over Brescia that helped the Pomeroys move into fifth in the RSC standings.
The Pomeroys and Bearcats played to a draw through 45 minutes as both teams took five shots, but SMWC broke through in the 59
th minute.
Hazma Zagmouzi fired a free kick that struck the crossbar beyond the leaping attempt of the Brescia goalkeeper and
Taiwo Anifowose rushed toward the net to knock it in before sprinting toward his teammates on the sideline for a raucous celebration.
Zagmouzi would add two more goals as the Pomeroys improved to 2-2 in River States Conference action against a team that was 2-0 in the RSC going into the match.
"I'm so glad the boys put all the effort on to the pitch," Zagmouzi said. "The free kick, that was unlucky, but my boy picked me up. I thank the boys, the coach. I'm glad we found that chemistry between us."
Coach Abe Tizaf was thrilled with his team's execution.
"To be honest, the games before, we didn't score much. We've worked on set pieces and corners and this is what happens. We practice it and this is the result we get," Tizaf said. "We're still in the process. We haven't done anything yet. We have to keep working. We have a lot more big games ahead."
