Abby Worley poured in 18 points and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women's basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 64-53 victory against Simmons College (Ky.) on Thursday night in the Pomeroys' home opener.
Worley hit 4 of 5 from 3-point range and 7 for 9 overall to go with five rebounds and three steals.
Avalee Jeffers had a solid all-around performance with nine points, six rebounds, six assists, a blocked shot and two steals. Â Samara Douglas chipped in 12 points.
SMWC jumped out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter as Worley connected on two 3-pointers. Worley's third 3-pointer made it 21-8 early in the second quarter.
The Pomeroys took complete control in the third quarter with a 10-0 run in which they held the Falcons scoreless for 6:05.
Destiny Thomas scored all four of her points off the bench during the spurt. Thomas led the team with four steals.
Simmons battled back in the fourth quarter behind post player Naria Reed, who finished with 17 points, but the closest the Falcons got was within 58-49 with 2:21 to go.
SMWC returns to action Saturday against Miami (Ohio) Middletown at 1 p.m. at Knoerle Center.
