Turnovers costly in Pomeroys' loss to Cincinnati Clermont

The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men's basketball team lost for the second time in as many days, falling 90-86 to Cincinnati Clermont on Tuesday night at Hamilton Arena.
The visiting Cougars were carried by the hot shooting of David Froedge, who scored 30 of his career-high 33 points in the second half. Froedge hit 6 of 7 from 3-point range in the second half.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (3-4) got season-high performances from Tarik Dixon, who had 26 points on 11 of 23 shooting, and Elkin Ramirez, who hit 4 of 6 from 3-point range for 16 points.
Ramirez hit clutch shots to help counter Froedge. Braden Edington set up Ramirez for a pair of 3-pointers that erased a 62-57 deficit for SMWC with 11:03 remaining.
Keith Germain, who had 14 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and three steals, put the Pomeroys ahead 65-62 to make it an 8-0 run for the home team.
But a few minutes later, Froedge had the Cougars back on top with a jumper and a 3-pointer with 8:43 remaining that made it 69-67 for the visitors.
A 5-0 run by Froedge put Clermont ahead 76-70 with 6:38 remaining. Another 5-0 spurt for Froedge, including his seventh 3-pointer, gave Clermont its biggest lead of the game, 82-74 with 2:22 remaining.
The Pomeroys mounted one last rally led by Dixon.
Dixon powered into the lane for a short jumper, hit a pull-up mid-range jumper and then pulled SMWC within 84-82 with 47 seconds left with another mid-range shot.
A pair of free throws by Aaron Collins gave SMWC a fighter's chance with 17 seconds left and 86-84 deficit. But Gavin Rabe hit two free throws and Froedge hit two more to secure the Cougars' win.
The Pomeroys shot 48.5 percent overall (32 for 66), but 32 turnovers provided 26 points off turnovers for Clermont.
SMWC returns to action next Tuesday at IU Southeast.
