Cinderella Season Falls Just Short in Loss to D'Youville

Ingram, Thomas Earn All-Tournament Honors

PETERSBURG, Va. – The SMWC Women's Basketball team's incredible tournament run came to close this afternoon in their 56-63 loss to #3 D'Youville College. After going 0-9 last season, the team went 12-13 in their first NAIA season to earn the #5 seed in the USCAA Tournament. An incredible come-from-behind victory in the first round and a thrashing of the #1 seed showed the heart and skill this team possessed as they made their deepest USCAA run in program history.
Quote | Head Coach Scot MacAllister
On his message to the team after the game...

"I'm just really proud of them and how far they've come. You always get a team and you just love them to death and you remember their names and I told them that I'd remember their names forever."
Quote | #5 Sydney Ingram
On what she would say to her teammates...

"Obviously it was not the outcome that we wanted but I think we preached that everybody play their hearts out and left it all out on the floor and we have no regrets. I'm just so proud of our team today."
Quote | #34 Avalee Jeffers
On what this experience showed the team...

"Like Sydney [Ingram] said our outcome wasn't what we wanted but those type of things just make us want to work harder. We just want to work harder and come back next year."
1st Half:

The Pomeroys took some time to find their rhythm but once they were locked in, they would go on a quick 11-2 run to get in control and finish the first quarter with a slim 13-12 lead. The 2nd quarter would go back and forth but the Pomeroys would fight under the basket as Hardiek's rebounding gave them plenty of second chances. A couple of layups would pad the lead and give SMWC a 6-point margin at the half.

2nd Half:

D'Youville would continue having to play from behind as they would miss 3-pointers and turn the ball over to SMWC. A huge three from Williams would give SMWC their largest lead of the day at 40-30 and a couple free throws would add to that lead. Both teams would trade 3-pointers at the end of the quarter but SMWC's 11-point lead still left them with breathing room. Some turnovers and fouls early in the quarter would shrink the lead as the Saints did an excellent job of hitting their free throws throughout the game. SMWC would get plenty of chances but just couldn't get anything to go on the offensive side. D'Youville would tie the game at 47 with just over five minutes left. The Poms would fight and keep it close but the Saints would hit their free throws and wrap this one up 56-63.

By the Numbers
  • Destiny Thomas and Sydney Ingram both scored 10 points to lead the team with Avale Jeffers (7) and Aliyah Williams (7) right behind them.
  • Allyson Hardiek's 15 rebounds led all players while adding 5 points and a pair of blocks.
  • The team was solid on their shots from behind the arc, shooting 50% to D'Youville's 25%.
