SMWC Softball Splits Two Extra-Inning Games in OKC

Team Moves to 3-3 on the Season

OKLAHOMA CITY, Ok. – The SMWC Softball team (3-3) finished the Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic in OKC with a 2-2 record after splitting a pair of games today. The Pomeroy's fell 8-7 in 8 innings to #7 nationally ranked Ottawa University. SMWC evened its record on the day 1-1 and on the season 3-3 with a 3-2 extra inning win against McPhearson University.
How It Happened

Game 1 saw the Pomeroys get on the board in the first when Jilliann Reese scored from 2nd base on a wind-blown infield single by Lyric Krause. Unfortunately, the bats fell silent the next 4 innings as the Poms fell behind 4-1. In the 6th inning the bats started to come alive as Rylee Pender and Cat Bowersock scored to cut the lead 4-3 after Ottawa answered with 2 of their own in the 6th. The hot hitting Pomeroys plated 3 more in the 7th with Faith Pokryfke, Hailey Boardman and Jaselyn Conn scoring to force the extra innings. The Pomeroys plated a run in the top of the 8th but were unable to hold the lead as Ottawa scored 2 runs to end the game.

Game 2 saw the Pomeroys bounce back with their own extra inning win. The Poms were led by Cam Scott who executed a steal of home in the 1st inning to give the Pomeroys the lead 1-0, Scott later hit a inside the park homerun in the 5th inning to extend the lead 2-0. McPhearson answered with 2 in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game. The score stayed tied until the 8th inning when Rylee Pender scored on a SAC fly by Lyric Krause to put SMWC ahead3-2. Summer Rocha and the Poms defense handled the rest and kept McPhearson off the board to secure the W.

"This was a great experience for us as a team. We came out here and competed with some of the best teams in NAIA. It also showed us we have a lot of work to do if we want to get to the level, we think we can compete at. The biggest thing is we have to cut down on our number of strike outs", said Coach Walker. "Any time you use 22 players in a DH it shows how important every role is on the team. We will continue to build on this as we travel to St. Louis to play Harris Stowe on Monday."
