Women’s Basketball Overcome Huge Deficit In Win Over B&S Syracuse

Team Rallys from Down 21 at Halftime

PETERSBURG, Va. – The SMWC Women's Basketball team won their first USCAA National Tournament game against Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse today despite a 21-point first half deficit. The team struggled against the #4 seed early but used a huge second half to win and move on to the semi-final game against #1 Clinton College.
1st Half:

The Pomeroys got out to a quick 5-0 lead, but B&S would go on a huge 19-0 run to take a commanding lead. SMWC struggled to not turnover the ball as they would give it away 7 times during the first half. They would wrap up the 1st quarter down 7-19 and looking to change their fortunes to avoid a deeper hole. The team would clean things up and keep the score close, capitalizing on B&S mistakes. The game would hover around a 19 point gap and the Pomeroys would go into the locker room down 21 points.

2nd Half:

The Pomeroys knew they would have the chip away at the B&S lead gradually and that's just what they did. It seemed like fortunes were reversed in the 2nd half as B&S couldn't hit anything and SMWC was firing on all cylinders. Some huge 3-pointers from Kat Perry helped to close the gap and the Pomeroys quickly used foul trouble for B&S to their advantage. Slowly but surely the team's rebounding started to come alive and SMWC would swing this one 73-66 for their largest comeback of the year.
By the Numbers
  • Sydney Ingram would lead the team with 22 points while adding 7 rebounds. She was followed in scoring by Brooklyn Jones (12) and Kathryn Perry (9).
  • Avalee Jeffers' 16 rebounds and Abby Worley's 4 assists would lead the team.
  • The team gradually improved their shooting throughout the game, shooting 8-33 in the first half to 16-33 in the 2nd. The Pomeroys shot 71.4% at the line and 38.5% from deep.
