Pomeroys pick up pair of road wins

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods improved to 19-3 overall and 7-2 in the River States Conference with a pair of conference road wins this weekend.
SMWC cruised to a 3-0 win at Alice Lloyd, posting a hitting percentage of .300 in a 25-11, 25-18, 25-12 victory on Friday. The Pomeroys won a back-and-froth battle with Shawnee State (8-7, 4-4) on Saturday by scores of 14-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 15-13.
Sophomore Raymiah Alllen tied with Hannah Zuege with a team-best 10 kills against Alice Lloyd. Allen's .500 hitting percentage was a season-best for her, but it was second to Karla Melendez (5 kills, .571) on Saturday.
Ariana Cruz led the team with 15 assists.
RSC newcomer Shawnee State won the opening set against the Pomeroys, but SMWC bounced back to get a big win thanks to a balanced offensive attack.
Middle hitters Alex Hernandez and Morgan Krause came up big; Hernandez had a team-high 15 kills (.464) and Krause a team-best five blocks to go with six kills.
"We all played as a unit. Cohesive. Really fun game and I'm proud of us," Krause said.
Coach Ashley Harris welcomed Hernandez back after missing multiple matches due to injury.
"I'm so pround. The middle is an area we've worked really hard and be a presence," Harris said, "and they definitely were a presence in this match."
Three other Pomeroys reached double-digits in kills as Zuege had 13, Masa Pesic 12 and Melendez 10.
