The SMWC women's basketball team won its second straight game, pulling away from Webber International for a 86-63 win the opening game of the Bevo Francis Classic on Friday afternoon.
Junior transfer
Irye Gomez, a guard from Bedford, Ind., had a career-best 28 points to lead the Pomeroys, adding six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Redshirt freshman
Samara Douglas joined her in double figures with 11 points.
SMWC finished both halves strong, shooting 56 percent in the second quarter and 55 percent in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.
Gomez contributed more than half of SMWC's 56 bench points, but it was Douglas the first to come into the game making an impact. She scored six in the first quarter to help SMWC build an early 10-6 lead. Gomez then hit two of her five 3-pointers.
SMWC couldn't extend its lead against the Warriors until the final minute of the first half. Gomez converted two layups, Abbi Parker hit a 3-pointer and
Brooklynn Jones scored to put SMWC ahead 39-29 at the break.
After halftime, Webber rallied within 40-36, but
Madison Fueger came up with two big buckets to score six straight Pomeroy points, putting SMWC ahead 47-38.
But Gomez and
Kylee Stepp put the game away in the fourth quarter with three 3-pointers each.
Fueger added eight points and seven rebounds.
Brooklynn Jones had three of SMWC's 12 steals.
SMWC plays Taylor on Saturday at 11 a.m.
