Pomeroys fall to UIndy despite second-half surge

Box Score SMWC women's basketball played one of its beset halves this season in the second half, outscoring the University of Indianapolis by a score of 59-42 on Tuesday night, but the visiting Greyounds' big first quarter was enough for them to hold on for a 98-87 victory at Hamilton Arena. 
Madison Fueger had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Brooklynn Jones scored 19 points, adding six rebounds and four assists to lead the Pomeroys. Abby Worley chipped in 14 points and six assists. Allyson Hardiek blocked six shots.
But the Pomeroys faced a 28-9 deficit after the first quarter as the Greyhounds came out strong behind Liv Becker, who went 7-of-7 from the field for 17 first-quarter points. 
The Pomeroys began to warm up in the second quarter -- with eight Pomeroys combining for 19 points -- after shooting 3 for 18 in the first 10 minutes. 
SMWC came out with energy after halftime to mount a rally. 
The Pomeroys matched their season-high of 33 points in a quarter behind 11 from Jones and eight from Abbi Parker, who connected on two 3-pointers. SMWC, facing an NCAA Division II program for the first time in the history of the program, shot 13 of 18 in the third period. The Pomeroys also defended well, holding UIndy to 34 percent in the period as Hardiek picked up four of her blocked shots.
The Pomeroys got within 62-48 with a 15-4 surge over a 3-minute, 44-second span early in the period. SMWC inched closer to within 71-59 on a jumper by Jones with 1:31 to go in  the period. But UIndy went into the fourth quarter with its lead back to 18 points. 
The Pomeroys regained momentum in the fourth quarter, making six steals - two each by Fueger, Destiny Thomas and Irye Gomez. Worley hit a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers. 
The Pomeroys (3-2) play host to Judson University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
