Tupuola ties school rebounds record as Pomeroys roll

SMWC had the chance to make a quick rebound from a Friday night loss on a last-second shot at Judson.
The Pomeroys did that in an emphatic fashion Saturday at Trinity Christian, and freshman Shon Tupuola literally rebounded into the SMWC record books with a 17-rebound performance in an 87-48 road win.
Tupuola, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound center, tied the single-game school record and added 12 points and two blocks.
The Pomeroys shot 60 percent in the first half to build a 48-24 lead at the break behind 10 different players getting into the scoring column.
SMWC jumped out to a double-digit lead less than five minutes into the action, with Cobie Barnes capping a 7-0 run with a 3-pointer and a layup to put the Pomeroys ahead 13-3. The Pomeroys' lead grew to 23, 39-16, on a Tarik Dixon 3-pointer at the 3:44 mark of the first half.
Lincoln Hale hit two of the team's five 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes on his way to a team-best eight points.
Barnes had nine in the second half to finish with a team-high 14 points. DaMeriz Merriweather reached double figures with 10. Chaz Birchfield had eight points, a team-high four assists  and two of the Pomeroys' 12 steals.
The Pomeroys excelled defensively as well, holding the host Trolls to 24.1 percent shooting overall and forcing 18 turnovers. Andre Irvin Jr., Hale, Greg Jenkins and Barnes also had two steals apiece.
The Pomeroys finished the game 32 of 66 (48.5 percent) overall and 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) from beyond the arc.
SMWC prepares for its home opener Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the University of Health Science and Pharmacy.
