RICHMOND, IND. --
Greg Jenkins had 21 of his 23 points in the second half and overtime Saturday afternoon -- he scored all 12 of the team's points in overtime -- providing one of several clutch performances to help make Pomeroys first-year head coach
Jesse McClung's first River States Conference victory a memorable one.
The Pomeroys left IU East with an 87-79 victory, a 1-0 record in the RSC and a 5-3 mark overall.
"I'm so proud of our guys and their toughness and resilience against a very good, very well-coached IU East team on the road," McClung said.
Cobie Barnes scored 32 points, the third best single-game performance in the third-year program's history, to lead the team in scoring. Barnes shot 12 of 19 from the field and 4 of 6 from 3-point range and added 12 rebounds.
Barnes came up big down the stretch in regulation before fouling out 30 seconds into the overtime period. He hit a tying 3-pointer to knot the score at 69-69 after IU East had rallied from a 60-48 deficit against the Pomeroys.
Barnes put SMWC ahead 71-69 with a basket in the paint, but Jake Johnson answered with a 3-pointer to put IU East back in front with 1:25 to go.
Jenkins drove for the go-ahead basket with 1:06 to go.
The game was tied again when Colt Meyer hit 1 of 2 at the line for the Red Wolves.
Jenkins again provided the go-ahead bucket with a driving basket with 18 seconds remaining, but IU East was able to score on a basket by Ibra Athie off an in-bounds play with 1.7 seconds to force overtime.
The Pomeroys opened overtime with Barnes picking up his fifth foul, but the one point for IU East off that whistle was all the Red Wolves could score until the 2:15 mark of the 5-minute period.
Jenkins continued to get into the paint for a basket or get to the charity stripe and the Pomeroys shut down the Red Wolves in OT. SMWC's defensive effort held the home team to 1 of 7 shooting in the overtime.
TOUGH DEFENSE
The Pomeroys held the Red Wolves to 44.9 percent shooting overall and 26.3 percent from 3-point range, both below their early-season averages of 47 percent and 33 percent.
Shon Tupuola's presence in the paint was a key factor and he had 3 blocked shots and two steals. Tupuola blocked a game-tying layup attempt by Jake Johnson with 20 seconds remaining in overtime that allowed Jenkins to extend the lead to four at the free-throw line.
Tupuola also had 15 rebounds, two shy of the school-record 17 he posted in a recent game at Trinity Christian.
BIRCHFIELD CONTINUES TO SHINE
Senior
Chaz Birchfield reached double figures for the fourth straight game and sixth time this season. Over the last four games he's made 72 percent (26 of 36) of his shots. On Saturday, he stuffed the stat sheet with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
ANOTHER IU UP NEXT
The Pomeroys look to remain one of three unbeaten RSC squads Tuesday against IU Southeast (4-5, 1-1 RSC).
