It was another day at the office for
Shon Tupuola and the Pomeroys.
The Pomeroys set a new single-game school-record as a team with 64 rebounds, with Tupuola hauling in 18 to go with 22 points and four blocks as the Pomeroys rolled to a 108-53 victory against East-West University on Friday night at Hamilton Arena.
The Pomeroys shot 38 percent in the first half, pulling in 16 of their 19 offensive boards in the first 20 minutes. Tupuola had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds by halftime.
Tupuola said he's just doing his part to help the team have success at both ends of the floor.
"If you don't get rebounds, you don't win the game," Tupuola said. "Even though I don't score that much, that's how I help the team. I like how we had some energy tonight. We kept a high head when one of our teammates got injured and came back out and finished the game."Â
The Pomeroys shot 2 of 16 from 3-point range in the first half, but bounced back to knock down 8 of 16 from long range in the second half.
SMWC made 22 of 33 from the field in the second half overall.
Tarik Dixon hit 4 of 5 beyond the arc in the second half, scoring 14 of his 17 points in his 13 minutes in the second half.
Cobie Barnes was perfect in the second half with 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting, including a 3-pointer and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. Barnes, averaging a team-high 21.8 points, liked the Pomeroys' defensive effort. SMWC held East-West to 27.8 percent shooting overall.Â
"It's been slow, but a good process. I think we're hitting our stride at the right time," Barnes said of the defensive effort. "(Offensively), my guys just trust me. We work hard every day. When you've got 15, 18 people having that trust and confidence instilled in you every day, it helps. Even when the shot's not falling, I always have guys in my ear telling me the next shot's going to fall. My teammates do a great job helping me have that mindset."Â
In the first half, the Pomeroys started strong, leading 18-6 by the 12:54 mark behind eight points from Tupuola.
The visiting Phantoms rallied to within 28-22 by the 7:43 mark. The Pomeroys went on a 9-0 spurt capped by two free throws from
Jesse Burdick, who finished with a season-high 11 points off the Pomeroys' bench.
SMWC started the second half outscoring East-West 10-3 over the first 3:11 of play as Burdick and Tupuola had four points apiece during the stretch.
