Consistency remains difficult for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men's volleyball to maintain. Flashes of cohesive and explosive play filled the Knoerle Center gym at times Tuesday night against Roosevelt, but the visitors came away with a four-set win by scores of 25-15, 25-22, 17-25, 28-26.
The Pomeroys (1-9) began to find their groove in the final points of the second set, pulling within 23-21 on a Mark Zmojdzin kill and within 24-22 on a finish by Julian Green. But Daniel Mahoney finished off the set for the Lakers.
SMWC built off that to open the third, jumping out to a 10-4 lead on a Zmojdzin kill. Christian Green, who provided a spark with a season-best six kills, finished an Ethan Martins set for a 15-9 lead.
Andrej Lindner had a pair of kills during a stretch in which the Pomeroys extended their lead to 20-13. Lindner added an ace to make it 23-16. Yammiel Martinez had a block and Simon Vega delivered an ace to close the set for the Pomeroys.
The Pomeroys found themselves in an early ole in the fourth set, but overcame the sluggish start that included three service errors as Roosevelt built a 9-6 lead.
Lindner and Martinez combined for a block and Green had another kill as the Pomeroys pulled even at 11-11.
Green, who finished with 11 kills, put the Pomeroys ahead 13-12, and Jacob Wisniewski added an ace for a 14-12 lead. Roosevelt erased a 19-18 deficit to take a 21-19 lead, but SMWC battled back to even the score on a solo block by Green.
A kill by Green set up a set point, 24-23, but a Jalen Noveda service error evened the score again. The Pomeroys fought off one match point when Zmojdzin put down a kill to tie the score at 26, but the Lakers took the next two points to secure the victory.
Zmojdzin led the way with 13 kills. Lindner had a team-high 15 digs. Ethan Martins racked up 30 assists.
SMWC returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action Friday against NAIA No. 14 Indiana Tech.
