Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women's basketball saw its season finish at Point Park on Monday night in the opening round of the River States Conference Tournament by a score of 84-61.
Brionna Sims scored 14 off the bench and senior
Avalee Jeffers put up 10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block in her final game for the Pomeroys..
Sims scored 10 in the second quarter to help put SMWC in position for a second-half rally.
The Pomeroys were unable to put a sustained run together. Sims converted a layup with 6:30 to go in the third quarter to pull SMWC within 53-42, but the Pioneers went into the fourth quarter with a 66-50 lead when Ari Bleda connected for a 3-pointer. Â
The Pomeroys held the Pioneers to 36 percent shooting, but the Pioneers won the rebounding battle 60-45, netting 21 second-chance points. Taylor Rinn had many of those, finishing with 22 points and 20 rebounds.
"We gameplanned all week for No. 52. She dominated us on the glass in (the first meeting with Point Park). She's just a tough guard. She moves well, she understands the flight of the ball," coach Terry Bowe said. "When we got it down to 11 or 12, we got three straight stops, but then we couldn't score.
"Credit to them. They're one of the hottest teams going into to the tournament."
Bowe will lose Jeffers but should return the rest of a roster that helped SMWC finish 16-11 overall for the third-best win total in school history.
'We have a nice nucleus returning. We don't need a bunch of pieces to bring in, but we have to replace a huge piece in Avalee. As disappointed as I am right now, I'm super proud of this group. They battled all year. They certainly met and exceeded expectations. Every single one of them," Bowe said.Â
Jeffers finishes second all-time at SMWC in rebounds, steals and blocks. While sad to see it end, Jeffers loved how her team competed this season - and on Monday night.
"We competed. It wasn't the ending we wanted. It was good to make our first appearance at the RSC Tournament," Jeffers said. "They'll be phenomenal next year. Tehy'll come back and dominate on both sides. They're pretty talented."
