Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys softball team played a double header on Saturday to finish up their trip at the Red Dirt Classic with games against Benedictine and Bethel (KS). The Pomeroys would defeat Benedictine 4-1and Bethel 3-0.
Summer Rocha pitched all seven innings for the Pomeroys against Benedictine. She earned the win after allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks. Rocha struck out four hitters. Ashley Shanks knocked in the first run for the Pomeroys with an RBI sacrifice fly. Camryn Scott scored on a pass ball to make it 2-0 in the third inning. Lyric Krause had an RBI single in the sixth inning and Jaselyn Conn had an RBI single to finish the scoring for the Pomeroys.
Gracie Ables got the win against Bethel (KS) after giving up just one hit over 5.2 IP. Ables allowed three walks and struck out 5. Lanna Martinez pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed one hit and struck out two. Martinez was awarded the save, this her first save of her college career. Tori Lee had an RBI single in the sixth inning and Hailey Boardman knocked in the other two runs for the Pomeroys in the seventh inning.
"We got great pitching today," said Head Coach Jim Walker, "It started in game one with Summer [Rocha]. She did a great job of attacking the strike zone. Ables was really dominant in game two. This is what we expected from Gracie and all of our pitchers this year. Lanna [Martinez] was huge coming on to get the last four outs to pick up the save."
The Pomeroys offense was slowed down today but they took advantage of the few chances they had in each game.
"We would like to score more runs, but we did a great job manufacturing runs in both games," said Walker, "In the second game, getting those two insurance runs in the seventh was huge on Boardman's grounder to the shortstop. We know good things are going to happen with our speed when we get the ball in play."
The Pomeroys improve to 8-5 overall on the season and return to action at home next Saturday March 11 as they take on IUPUC for a doubleheader. First pitch for the first game is scheduled for 1:00 pm with game two to start 30 minutes after game one ends.
