Gomez posts 5th-best scoring game in school history in SMWC win

Irye Gomez put together one of the five best scoring performances in SMWC women's baskeball history and the Pomeroys held host IU Kokomo to 31.9 percent shooting to improve to snap a 3-game losing streak.
The Pomeroys (9-7, 4-2 River States Conference) enjoyed their second-best shooting game of the season, knocking down 47.3 percent overall and 43.5 percent (10 of 23) from 3-point range.
Gomez connected on 13 of 19 from the field and 6 of 11 from 3-point range.
Brooklynn Jones added 6 of 13 from the field for 14 points. Abigail Parker chipped in 11 points off the bench.
The Pomeroys jumped out to a 25-17 lead after the first quarter behind seven points from Jones. Gomez hit 2 of 3 from 3-point range.
The Pomeroys were even better in the second quarter, holding the host Cougars to 3-of-17 shooting in the period to extend their lead to 42-25.
The Cougars put together a strong third quarter to close the gap with 26 points, but SMWC's offense continued to roll behind Gomez, who had 11 points in the period.
 
NEWS AND NOTES
Madison Fueger returned after a two-game absence due to injury to post nine points and eight rebounds.
Brooklynn Jones had a season-high seven assists to go with nine rebounds.
SMWC hauled in 46 rebounds, but IU Kokomo also pulled in 46. The Cougars had the edge with 29 second-chance points off 22 offensive rebounds.
SMWC holds on to second place in the RSC West Division, three games behind first-place Oakland City.
