Pomeroys rally, come up short to Ohio Christian

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women's basketball erased a 14-point third quarter deficit to take an early fourth-quarter lead, but the Pomeroys fell short to Ohio Christian on Wednesday by a score of 77-72.
The Pomeroys stormed back from a 54-40 deficit thanks to a 25-point third quarter. Irye Gomez (Bedford, Ind./BNL) keyed a 12-2 spurt by SMWC, capping the run with a steal and layup to cut the Trailblazers' lead to 58-52.
Gomez, who scored all 15 of her points in the second half, then connected on a pair of 3-pointers to pull SMWC within 60-58. Samara Douglas tied the score at 61-61 with 38 seconds remaining in the period.
Abby Worley (Mt. Vernon) put SMWC ahead 63-61 with a mid-range jumper at the 9:02 mark of the fourth quarter. Haley Cox, who had 35 points for Ohio Christian (9-4, 1-2 RSC), hit a 3-pointer and the Trailblazers led until Gomez connected for her third 3-pointer with 2:36 to go to put the Pomeroys ahead 70-68.
Destiny Thomas (Brownsburg, evened the score at 72-72 with two free throws with 59 seconds left, but Cox hit two foul shots 10 seconds later and the Trailblazers led the remainder of the game.
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Brooklynn Jones (Loogootee) scored 20 of her 22 points in the first half for SMWC (8-6, 3-1 RSC). Jones added 10 rebounds and five assists.
  • The Pomeroys were playing without leading scorer and rebounder Madison Fueger (lower leg), who was injured last week in the Gyrene Christmas Classic in Ave Maria, Fla.
  • Thomas led the Pomeroys with six assists.
  • Senior Allyson Hardiek (Altamont, Ill.) had a season-best 11 rebounds.
  • Aubrey Burgess (Linton) had a career-best four steals.
