LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College sprint football team remained undefeated on the season with a 54-26 road victory over Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 12).
SMWC improved to 4-0 on the season while Bellarmine dropped to 3-2. The Pomeroys and Calumet College of St. Joseph are tied at 4-0 atop the Midwest Sprint Football League standings and now with both two games clear of the Knights and the tiebreaker advantage are guaranteed to host the opening round of the league playoffs on November 2.
A national television audience on ESPN Plus saw the Pomeroys improved to a perfect 10-0 all-time in road contests in their third season. They will hit the road again on Friday, October 18 when they travel to Walsh (Ohio) for a matchup scheduled for a 7 pm (ET) kickoff.
Bellarmine struck first with a Tyler Smith 3-yard run to open the second half for the 7-0 advantage. A game that was scoreless in the first quarter became a shootout quick when Darron Hazzard scampered 12 yards for pay dirt with 5:43 left in the second stanza and he scored the two point conversion for an 8-7 lead.
Marques Reese would catch a 40-yard touchdown pass off the arm of
Jeremiah Tosky with 3:19 left before the break for the 14-7 lead that SMWC would carry into the halftime locker room.
Reese scored on a 62-yard scoring strike from Tosky just 19 seconds into the third quarter to stretch the lead out to 22-7. Then Hazzard reached the end zone for the second time when he scored with 13:38 on the clock to make it 30-7.
Keandre Jones ran the ball 69 yards for a touchdown with 9:19 left in the third quarter to cap a two-play drive and answer a Bellarmine score to make it 36-14. Bellarmine would score on their next drive to take a 36-20 lead, but
Darrius Megnin was credited with a 98-yard defensive two-point conversion on the attempt to make it 38-20.
After a defensive safety made it 40-20 with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter,
Devron Johnson caught Tosky's third touchdown pass of the game for the 46-20 lead. Tosky capped the scoring with 9:16 remaining in the game for the 54-26 final margin of victory.
Tosky finished the game 13-of-27 passing for 241 yards and three touchdowns and added 26 rushing yards and another touchdown in the win. Jones led the way on the ground with 110 yards and a score while Hazzard finished with 108 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Reese was the top passing target on the day with six catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns while
Kyle Vernelson added four catches for 48 yards and Johnson had two receptions for 22 yards and a score.
Joshua Wence paced the Pomeroys with nine total tackles including 1.5 for a loss while
Austin Petrillo had two interceptions for 84 yards. The SMWC defense had four interceptions in the game as
Christian Woodard and
Samson Ajao also picked off the Knights in the contest.
SMWC had 11 tackles for a loss and four quarterback sacks including a team-high 1.5 sacks from
Nic Crone in the victory.
