SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team dropped the first set against visiting Brescia (Ky.) but used an accurate offensive attack to roar back for the 3-1 victory inside the Knoerle Center.
SMWC improved to 27-4, 6-4 RSC while Brescia fell to 6-21, 2-8 RSC.
Set scores for the match were 22-25, 25-12, 27-25 and 25-21.
Karla Melendez posted 16 kills against just two errors on 30 attempts for a sparking hititng percentage of .467.
Alex Hernandez added eight kills for a .333 hitting percentage while
Tori Schopmeyer and
Grace Geisler added eight each. Overall, SMWC recorded 55 kills against just 14 errors on 152 attempts for a .270 attack percentage.
Kanon Miyaki led the way with four service aces in the contest as the Pomeroys tallied 11 all together.
Audrey Lee,
Aden Britt and Geisler each added two service aces to the cause.
Jocelyn Chavez tallied 18 digs in the game while Britt added 13 to go with her 18 set assists and four kills.
Alexis Keoho posted 21 set assists to lead the Pomeroys.
Both teams found success at the net with 14 total blocks as Hernandez and
Isabel Hansen each had a block solo and Hernandez added three block assists.
With the match tied at one set each, the Pomeroys trailed in set three by the score of 24-23 when Melendez came up with a kill to level the score. Geisler recorded a kill to make it set point and SMWC took advantage of a Brescia attack error the 27-25 win and the 2-1 lead. In the deciding fourth set, the Pomeroys and Brescia were tied at 20, when
Sofia Soto posted a kill and a Bearcat attack error pushed the lead out to 22-20. A service ace from
Audrey Lee and a kill from Melendez earned the 25-21 victory in the fourth set and the 3-1 decision.
The Pomeroys will host West Virginia Tech on Friday, October 25 inside Knoerle Center in another River States Conference matchup. First serve for the annual White Out match is set for 7:00 pm (ET). The action continues on Saturday, October 26 when SMWC will host Rio Grande at Noon (ET).
