SMWC Captures 5 Set Thriller On Friday Night Inside Knoerle Center

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- In a key River States Conference matchup against visiting West Virginia Tech, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Pomeroys overcame a 2-1 deficit by capturing the final two sets en route to a 3-2 victory.

The Pomeroys remained undefeated at home and improved to 28-4, 7-4 RSC while West Virginia Tech fell to 10-13, 5-6 RSC.

The offensive attack was again paced by Karla Melendez who posted 19 kills on 59 attacks while Alex Hernandez complemented her with 15 kills. Off the bench, Tori Schopmeyer came in and recorded 10 kills in the winning effort. It was a tough go for both teams on the offensive end as the Pomeroys recorded a .176 attack percentage while limiting WVT to just a .076 mark.

Alexis Keoho recorded 29 set assists in the match while Aden Britt recorded 25. There were seven Pomeroys service aces in the contest including three from Kanon Miyaki which came in important spots. Leishmarie Virella added two of her own.

Jocelyn Chavez continued to make it tough on the WVT attack with 34 digs in the match while Britt added 12 as did Keoho and Virella posted 11. Vivien Reese and Isabel Hansen each had block solos while Reese added three block assists and Hansen posted six.

The Pomeroys coasted to a 25-16 win in the first set and led late in both the second and third sets before giving up late WVT rallies before falling 26-24 and 25-23. In the fourth set, the Pomeroys jumped out to an early lead and finished the deal with a 25-19 victory.

SMWC recorded kills from Hansen and Reese as well as benefited from a WVT attack error for the early 3-0 lead in the deciding fifth set which forced a timeout. A 4-0 run later in the action stretched the lead out to 8-4 and they would be as close as the visitors would get as the Pomeroys scored the final three points en route to the 15-10 victory and the 3-2 win.

There's no rest for SMWC as they return back to the Knoerle Center at Noon (ET) on Saturday, October 26 to face off against Rio Grande (Ohio) in another pivitol River States Conference match.
