SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer team battled the damp conditions at the SMWC Soccer Complex en route to a 5-1 victory over visiting Brescia on Thursday (Oct. 31).
The Pomeroys improved to 5-11, 2-5 RSC while Brescia fell to 2-12-4, 1-5-2 RSC. With the victory, SMWC remains alive for a River States Conference Tournament berth heading into the regular season finale at West Virginia Tech on Saturday, November 2. Kickoff in the pivotal match is set for 3:30 pm (ET).
Andoni Ybanez got the Pomeroys on the scoreboard off the assist from
Ivan Gelado in the game's ninth minute for the early 1-0 lead. Brescia would level the score in the 11th minute but it was all SMWC the rest of the way en route to victory.
Gelado would score the next goal in the game's 25th minute off the assist from Gayol to push SMWC ahead 2-1. In the 35th minute,
Carlington Henry scored off the feed from Gelado for the 3-1 lead heading into halftime.
Gayol would score two goals in the final 12 minutes the first coming in the 78th minute off the assist fromÂ
Joao Montemor to stretch it to 4-1. Gayol scored again in the 88th minute off assists from
Marc Valderrama and
Jacobo Galvez for the 5-1 victory.
In goal,
Harry Jackson allowed the one goal but did record five saves in victory. SMWC owned a 23-19 edge in shots including a mark of 15-6 in shots on goal. Gelado posted seven shots in the game to lead the way while he fired on frame a total of five times in the contest.
