DEFIANCE, Ohio -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team reached the 20-win mark as they took a pair of matches from home standing Defiance (Ohio) on Friday night (Oct. 4) on the road. The Woods won the first contest by the score of 3-1 while they swept the nightcap by the score of 3-0.
The Pomeroys improved to 20-3 on the season while Defiance fell to 8-15.
In the first match, SMWC won 3-1 by set scores of 26-24, 27-25, 15-25, 25-16.
Karla Melendez paced the Pomeroy offensive attack with 14 kills while
Grace Geisler added nine and
Tori Schopmeyer chipped in with eight.
Alondra Garcia Alicea tallied four service aces in the victory. Geisler was strong in service as well as she likewise was credited with four.
Isabel Hansen tallied four total blocks while
Jocelyn Chavez was credited with 14 digs.
Alexis Keoho posted 21 set assists in the victory.Â
A pair of Geisler kills sealed up the first set by the count of 26-24 to break open a tied contest while it was Melendez with back-to-back kills in the second set to break open a 25-all tie for the two point victory.
In the second contest of the evening, the Pomeroys swept Defiance. Set scores were 25-19. 27-25 and 25-14.
Once again, the top attacker was Melendez who posted 10 kills while Geisler tied for the lead in service aces with four for the second consecutive match.
Vivien Reese and Hansen tied for the team lead in blocks with three each.
Aden Britt posted 15 set assists and Chavez led the way with 13 digs.
The Pomeroys will return home on Wednesday, October 9 as they will host a pair of matches inside the Knoerle Center beginning against Franklin College at 3 pm (ET). Then at 7 pm (ET), SMWC will host the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy. These matches begin a stretch of five in a row at home for the Pomeroys.
