OWENSBORO, Ky. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team dropped its River States Conference opener at Brescia (Ky.) by the score of 70-64 on Tuesday evening (Nov. 26) on the road.
The Pomeroys fell to 6-3, 0-1 RSC while Brescia improved to 7-1, 1-0 RSC. SMWC returns home to face off against IU-Northwest on Sunday, December 1 at 1 pm (ET) in non-conference action inside the Knoerle Center.
Madison Fueger led the way with 23 points and eight rebounds while
Brooklynn Jones posted 15 points and connected on a 3-pointer. It was a defensive struggle as the Pomeroys hit just over 31 percent of their shots while limiting Brescia to just 38 percent shooting. Brescia was able to convert 25-of-31 attempts at the free throw line in the contest.
A lay-up from Fueger with just under two minutes remaining drew the Pomeroys within 63-61. Brescia would respond with a 7-0 run to secure the victory until
Aubrey Burgess converted a conventional 3-point play with 12 seconds remaining to draw within 70-64.
