The Crosstown Classic Trophy Stays Home With Win At Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team will keep the Crosstown Classic Trophy on the West side of the county by virtue of their 71-65 road victory over Rose-Hulman on Friday evening (Nov. 8) at Hulbert Arena.

The Pomeroys improved to a perfect 4-0 on the season -- a mark that is even more impressive considering they are 3-0 this season in true road games. The game was the season opener for the Fightin' Engineers. SMWC is now 16-13 all-time in the series and have won each of the last two meetings.

Madison Fueger led the way for the Pomeroys with 16 points as she was 7-of-10 from the field and added five rebounds to her stat line. Samara Douglas narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds to go with a pair of blocked shots and steals. Brooklynn Jones who went over the 1,000 point scored total for her career in the last game tallied 12 points plus three steals on the defensive end.

SMWC made 21 trips to the charity stripe and converted 17 of those attempts in the win.

The Pomeroys would trail by double digits late in the second quarter until they put together a 6-0 run capped by a jumper from Destiny Thomas to trim the deficit down to 35-28 with just under a minute remaining before the half. RHIT added just a free throw after the run and led 36-28 at the break.

SMWC trailed by eight points midway through the third stanza when they rattled off 11 in a row and was capped by a Douglas steal and score with 3:06 remaining for the 44-41 lead. A 3-pointer from Jones with 48 seconds left staked SMWC to a 53-48 advantage and would lead by three points heading into the fourth quarter.

Douglas would cap a 6-0 run late in the fourth quarter with a jumper which pushed SMWC ahead 63-56. A 3-pointer from RHIT cut the SMWC lead down to just a point but the Pomeroys would hit five of their final six free throws for the 71-65 victory.
