Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Craig Pearson

Pomeroys sweep home-opening Saturday

The SMWC men's volleyball team surpassed its 2023 season win total Saturday, improving to 4-1 in the 2024 season with a pair of 3-0 sweeps.
The Pomeroys defeated Kentucky State 25-13, 25-11, 25-18 and finished the day off with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-16 victory against Midway. The Pomeroys posted a school-record .394 hitting percentage vs. the Eagles.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT
Against Kentucky State, freshman Bentley Meyer led the Pomeroys with a .412 attack percentage, posting a team-best 10 kills. Meyer followed that up with 12 kills - and a .474 hitting percentage - vs. Midway.
The .474 hitting percentage was the second-best individual performance in program history.
Not bad for the first two matches of his collegiate career. Meyer had been rehabbing an off-season injury and did not play in the Pomeroys' first three matches of the season.

OTHER STRONG PERFORMANCES
Connor Orrock posted five service aces vs. Kentucky State, setting a program record for aces in a 3-set match. Orrock also had a team-high 13 assists.
Other attackers with solid matches were Joseph Szadorski (5 kills/.333 hitting percentage), Christian Green (5 kills .375) and Marko Zolnjan (4 kills/1.000).
Against Midway, Zolnjan posted nine kills with a .467 hitting percentage as well as four aces and five digs.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • The Pomeroys' 38 kills vs. Midway set a program record for most in a 3-set win.
  • The Pomeroys split a pair of matches vs. Midway last season, winning at home 3-0 and losing 3-0 on the road.
  • Brycen Yadao led the Pomeroys with 23 digs Saturday. The sophomore from Mililani, Hawaii, was a late additino to the Pomeroys' roster as a transfer from Mount Mercy University.
