MIDWAY, Ky. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods softball team returned to action after having a pair of doubleheaders cancelled over the past week and a half to begin a busy stretch of 12 games in seven days by splitting a River States Conference doubleheader at Midway (Ky.) After dropping the first game of the day by the score of 3-2, they came back and won the nightcap 12-1.
The Woods is now 4-6 on the young season and are 1-1 in the RSC. Midway is now 3-9, 1-1 in conference play.
In the day's second contest,
Lyric Krause hit over the centerfield wall to drive in
Jaselyn Conn for the quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A
Maddie Smith sacrifice fly in the top of the 2
nd inning stretched the lead to 3-0. Midway would get a run back in the bottom half of the frame on a homer from Rhodes before Krause doubled to right field in the third to score Conn and then
Jaleigh Crawford doubled to right field to score Krause for the 5-1 advantage. Conn would notch and RBI single in the fourth which scored
Abbi Henderson and
Emily Singleton for the 7-1 cushion. SMWC made it 9-1 on a two RBI single from
Jasmine Kinzer to round out the frame. In the fifth,
Makayla Jackman and Henderson posted unearned runs before Krause drove in her fourth run of the game with a single to center field, to score Conn.
Krause went 4-for-4 in the game with four RBI and three runs scored, posting a home run, double and single and was just a triple shy of the cycle. Henderson tallied a pair of hits in the contest as well while Kinzer was credited with two RBI.
Summer Rocha improved to 3-1 on the season with a complete game five innings of work allowing only three hits and one run while striking out a pair.
In the day's first game, Midway got out to a 3-0 advantage with two runs in the first inning and another off an infield single in the fourth. Krause would reach on an infield single in the top of the sixth inning to score
Ruby Gray and whittle the deficit down to 3-1. Crawford would then single to left field to score Conn to make it a one-run contest. The Woods were unable to get a runner on base in the seventh as they fell, 3-2.
Jaleigh Crawford was 3-for-3 at the plate in the first game while
Abbi Henderson recorded a pair of base hits.
Marin Jacobs fell to 1-2 on the year by allowing three runs in three innings of work while
Emily Fitzwater kept the Pomeroys in the game with three innings of scoreless relief and striking out five.
The adjusted schedule continues right away as the Pomeroys travel to IU-Southeast on Monday, March 11 for a pair of conference contests. First pitch of game 1 is set for Noon (ET).
