Pomeroy Softball Takes Two From Trinity Christian

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods softball team extended their winning streak to four games with a home-opening doubleheader sweep over visiting Trinity Christian College (Ill.) on Wednesday afternoon. SMWC earned a 5-2 victory in game 1 and came from behind to earn a 6-4 win in the nightcap at the SMWC Softball Field.

The Pomeroys leveled their season record at 8-8 with the victories while TCC dropped to 7-13.

In the first contest, Abbi Henderson got The Woods on the board with a RBI triple in the bottom of the third inning to score Ruby Gray. Makayla Jackman then pushed Henderson across with an RBI single for the 2-0 lead. Gray would reach on a fielder's choice in the fourth to score Maddie Smith to stretch the advantage out to 3-0. Jackson would double to score Gray and Smith also in the fourth inning for the 5-0 lead. TCC would score twice on the final play of the game as The Woods grabbed the 5-2 victory.

Jackson finished 2-of-3 at the plate with three RBI in the contest. Marin Jacobs picked up the victory by tossing seven innings allowing just five hits one earned run and striking out two.

A Nevaeh Pender single in the bottom of the second inning knotted the score in game two at 1-1 as Jasmine Kinzer cross the plate. An RBI double from Jackman scored Henderson in the third inning to answer a TCC score and leveled the tally at 2.

TCC scored a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings for a 4-2 cushion but the Pomeroys came roaring back with an RBI single from Kinzer to score Abby Broughton and whittle the deficit down to just 4-3. Pender pushed Gray across the plate with an RBI single to knot the contest at 4. A pair of passed balls allowed Kinzer and Pender to score for the 6-4 lead.

Emily Fitzwater came into the contest to pitch the final three innings for the victory. She allowed three hits and one run. Summer Rocha fanned five batters over the first four innings in the contest.

Lyric Krause, Kinzer, Justyce Rohrabaugh and Pender each enjoyed multi-hit games in the win.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods stays at home with a River States Conference doubleheader against Shawnee State on Friday, March 15 beginning at 3 pm (ET). It's fan appreciation week at The Woods – admission is free to all athletic events this week!
