SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Siena Heights went out to a quick 2-0 lead to start the second match of the conference doubleheader weekend before Saint Mary-of-the-Woods came roaring back in the third set before falling by scores of 25-20, 25-11 and 28-26 in men's college volleyball action at the Knoerle Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Pomeroys fell to 9-6, 2-4 WHAC while the Saints improved to 7-7, 5-5 WHAC.
Marko Zolnjan once again paced the Poms with eight kills and an attack percentage of .250 to go with a pair of digs and three blocks.
Ethan Martins was the leader with 16 assists while
Manase Fetulimoeata posted five kills and swung at a rate of .333.
SMWC scored the first two points of the third set including a Fetulimoeata kill for a 2-0 cushion. Knotted a 7, the Pomeroys scored the set's next four points including a
Connor Orrock service ace for the 11-7 cushion. Leading 13-9, Siena Heights scored eight points in a row to take a 17-13 lead before a Saints service error stopped the bleeding and got the Pomeroys within 17-14. SMWC would take advantage of back-to-back mistakes by Siena Heights to take a brief 23-22 lead before the Saints came back to knot the contest at 26. Two intense battles for the set occurred on the next two points by eventually an attack error from Fetulimoeata ended the contest with a 28-26 Saints victory.
Marc Aresenault led the way for Siena Heights with 10 kills.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will next play at Indiana Tech on Friday & Saturday, March 8-9 at Indiana Tech. Friday's match begins at 7 pm (ET) while Saturday's contest will begin at 3 pm (ET).
