SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Visiting St. Mary-of-the-Woods took the first set of a Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Contest at Lawrence Tech (Mich.) but the Blue Devils came back to earn the 3-1 victory (25-23, 25-14, 25-21, 25-18).
The Pomeroys fell to 14-13, 2-11 WHAC while Lawrence Tech improved to 10-10, 5-7 WHAC.
Marko Zolnjan led the way with 11 kills for the Pomeroys while
Bentley Meyer added 10.
Yammiel Martinez had seven blocks while
Ethan Martins tallied 34 set assists and Manse Fetulimoeata recorded 11 digs.
A kill by
Joseph Szadorski staked the Pomeroys to a 14-9 lead in the opening set. They stretched the lead out to 16-10 before the Blue Devils closed the gap to 17-16. A kill by
Bentley Meyer kick started a run six points in a row for SMWC which continued with block assists from Meyer and
Yammiel Martinez and ended with a
Marko Zolnjan kill for the 22-16 lead. After Lawrence Tech scored they committed an attack error and the Pomeroys led 24-17.
The Blue Devils would come all the way back to draw within 24-23, but Zolnjan finished Lawrence Tech off with a kill which resulted in a block that landed just out of bounds for the 25-23 set victory. Unofficially, Zolnjan had six kills in the first set alone.
Lawrence Tech would hold large leads in the second set and eventually won 25-14 to level the overall score at one set each.
Zolnjan recorded a power kill early in the third set to stop a Blue Devil run and draw the Pomeroys within 6-4. Martinez kill a ball to stop the Blue Devil offensive attack and make it 7-5. A
Brycen Yadao service ace kept SMWC in it at 11-10 and a Blue Devils attack error made it 14-13. Meyer would record a kill to draw within 15-14, but Lawrence Tech scored three in a row for the 18-14 advantage.
Out of a timeout,
Manase Fetulimoeata recorded a kill to stop the Blue Devil run and draw within 18-15. The two teams traded scores as Lawrence Tech was charged with a service error but they posted a kill on the next rally for the 20-16 lead. Zolnjan recorded a kill to get the Pomeroys within three points. Martinez made it three points in a row for SMWC to draw within a pair at 22-20. After the Blue Devils got to set point, Martinez posted a kill out of a timeout by Lawrence Tech earned the 25-21 victory.
In the fourth set, Lawrence Tech scored the set's first seven points but the Pomeroys showed fight including a big block solo from Martinez to make it 9-3.
Ethan Martins dumped the ball over the net to make it 11-5 with a kill.
Connor Orrock posted a kill with a big slam across the court to draw the Pomeroys within 19-13.
The Pomeroys are back in action when they play again at Lawrence Tech (Mich.) on Saturday March 30. First serve is at 3 pm (ET).
