ST. MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The St. Mary-of-the-Woods softball team swept a pair of contests over IUPUC (IU-Columbus) on Friday afternoon at the SMWC Softball Field. The Pomeroys won the first game 8-0 in five innings and also took the second contest 7-5.
SMWC improved to 27-13 (20-6 RSC) while IUPUC falls to 10-23 (8-1 RSC).
In the first game, the Woods scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning when Jaselyn Conn recorded a two RBI double to left field to score Abbi Henderson and Jasmine Kinzer. SMWC tacked on another run in the third when Lyric Krause singled to right center to score Conn for the 5-0 advantage. Annika Hannigan singled home Abby Broughton for the 6-0 lead in the fourth inning. Before a Kinzer RBI pushed Hannigan across. The double steal of Henderson and Ruby Gray gave the Pomeroys an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Marin Jacobs went five full innings, allowing four hits and no runs with three strikeouts to earn the victory.
Conn was 1-of-1 at the plate with two RBI while Jaleigh Crawford was 1-of-3 with a pair of RBI. The Pomeroys stole seven bases in the contest, including a pair by Henderson, Conn and Crawford.
In the second contest, Krause singled to centerfield to score Conn and Kinzer for the quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. IUPUC got one back in the third inning, before Justyce Rohrabaugh scored on an error for the 3-1 lead. Kinzer hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the 5-1 lead.
IUPUC scored again in the fifth inning Broughton reached home on the double steal for the 6-2 lead. Katrina Strow scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning for the 7-2 cushion.
In the lead off position, Kinzer was 1-of-4 batting with two runs scored and two RBI while Krause was 2-of-3 with a pair of RBI.
Summer Rocha picked up the victory with 6.1 innings with 10 hits allowed and five runs. Rocha struck out three in the victory. Emily Fitzwater came in for the final two outs to pick up the save.
The Pomeroys remain home for Senior Day at the SMWC Softball Field on Saturday April 20 against IUPUC. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 pm (ET).
