OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – On the final day of the regular season, the SMWC softball team was swept at Oakland City in a River States Conference doubleheader. Oakland City won the first contest 4-1 before coming back to win the nightcap by the same score of 4-1.
SMWC fell to 31-15 (24-8 RSC) while Oakland City improved to 26-20 (17-13 RSC). The Pomeroys are the RSC East Division #3 seed at the River States Conference Tournament and will play at Noon (ET) on Thursday, May 2 in South Charleston, W.V.
In the opener, the Pomeroys grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from Jaselyn Conn which scored Jasmine Kinzer in the top of the first inning. The Pomeroys would allow three runs to the Mighty Oaks in the bottom of the first inning and another in the second en route to the 4-1 defeat.
Lyric Krause had the lone Pomeroy base hit finishing the day 1-of-2 at the plate while Conn had the only RBI. Marin Jacobs gave up six hits and four runs in the first 1.2 innings while Emily Fitzwater kept Oakland City at bay allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out two over the final 4.1 innings.
Oakland City would score twice in the bottom of the first inning in the second contest for the 2-0 lead before Annika Hannigan singled to left field in the second to score Jaleigh Crawford to cut the deficit down to just 2-1. But Oakland City came back with two more in the fifth to stretch their lead back out to 4-1.
Hannigan finished the second game with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate with a RBI. Summer Rocha went 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs with four strikeouts despite taking the loss.
