ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – On a cold and chilly afternoon at the SMWC Softball Field, the Pomeroys defeated West Virginia Tech 9-4 in the opening game of a doubleheader and then came back to lead 12-2 in the nightcap before the game was suspended in the bottom of the third inning.
SMWC's record moved to 18-11 (11-4 RSC) on the season while West Virginia Tech is now 9-19 (5-12 RSC).
West Virginia Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening game when Wilkens homered in the top of the third inning. It would be until the bottom of the fifth before the Pomeroys would score as
Jasmine Kinzer singled to drive in
Justyce Rohrabaugh to make it 2-1.
Jaselyn Conn then bombed a three-run homer which also scored
Abbi Henderson and Kinzer to make it 4-2 in favor of SMWC.
Also in the fifth inning,
Lyric Krause homered to make it 5-2 before
Emily Fitzwater recorded a RBI single to score Naveah Pender and
Jaleigh Crawford for the 7-2 advantage. A solo homer in the sixth inning cut the lead down to just three runs before Conn singled home Kinzer and Krause tripled home Conn for the 9-2 lead. A wild pitch allowed the final run of the game before SMWC recorded the final outs for the 9-4 victory.
Kinzer, Henderson, Conn and Crause each had multiple hits in the contest with Conn driving in four runs and scoring two more. Krause also added a pair of RBI in the contest.
In the circle,
Marin Jacobs picked up the victory with 5.2 innings of six hit softball allowing three runs and striking out six. Fitzwater came in relief to pitch 1.1 innings with two hits allowed and a strike out.
As in the first contest, West Virginia Tech scored twice early – this time in the top of the first inning – for the early 2-0 cushion. Kinzer and Conn both walked and Kinzer came in to score on a Krause RBI to cut into the lead. After Crawford singled home Conn to knot the game at 2,
Hannah Boardman hit a ground ball to the right centerfield gap which went all the way to wall to score Crawford and Krause for the 4-2 lead. Kinzer walked with the bases loaded to make it 5-2 at the end of the opening frame.
Conn scored again in the second off the bat of Boardman before a Hannigan double drove in Krause for the 7-2 advantage. Pender would single to score Hannigan for the 8-2 lead.
Krause recorded a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning to score Kinzer and the lead stretched out to 9-2. Crawford then singled to score Henderson and then Boardman reached on a fielder's choice which scored Crawford and Conn for the 12-2 victory.
The second game was then suspended after multiple ejections for West Virginia Tech pending a final ruling from the NAIA National Office.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods returns to action on Saturday, April 6 when they host Rio Grande (Ohio) for a pair of River States Conference games beginning at 1 pm (ET).
