MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Visiting St. Mary-of-the-Woods fell in the first set but rebounded with three consecutive set wins to take down Bethel (Ind.) by the score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon (25-27, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23).
The Pomeroys improved to 15-15, 3-13 WHAC while Bethel (Ind.) dropped to 9-13, 4-11 WHAC.
Manase Fetulimoeata &
Marko Zolnjan led the way for the Pomeroys with 12 kills each while
Joseph Szadorski chipped in with eight.
Connor Orrock blasted five service aces while Szadorski had six total blocks and
Bentley Meyer tallied five.
Ethan Martins led the way with 38 assists with Zolnjan had 14 digs.
SMWC tallied 12 service aces in the match and posted 10 total blocks in the winning effort.
The Pomeroys led by as many as seven points in the first set, but a late rally from Bethel gave them the 27-25 victory in come-from-behind fashion.
SMWC would trail early in the second set before four points in a row leveled the score at 8. A Bethel service error followed by an Orrock service ace put the Pomeroys ahead 20-17. Tied at 22, Fetulimoeata recorded a kill and then an attack error set up set up. A Zolnjan service ace gave SMWC the 25-22 victory.
The Woods would race out to a quick 3-0 lead in the third set on blocks by
Yammiel Martinez and Zolnjan and then a 4-0 run capped by blocks from Meyer and Szadorski staked SMWC to the 9-4 lead. Fetulimoeata recorded kills on consecutive rallies for an 18-10 advantage. SMWC would score four in a row late for the 24-16 lead capped by a Meyer kill and made it a 25-17 victory on a kill from Szadorski.
Three points in a row for the Woods opened the deciding fourth set capped by a kill from Zolnjan. A match deciding seven points in a row began with a Bethel service error and ended with a Meyer kill for the 14-6 lead. Bethel would knot the score at 21 before a Szadorski kill, an
Andrej Lindner service ace and a kill by Zolnjan pushed the Pomeroys ahead 24-21. After two points from Bethel, they committed a service error and the Woods earned the 25-23 victory.
The Pomeroys are back in action for the final weekend of the season when they host Aquinas (Mich.) on Friday & Saturday (April 12-13) inside the Knoerle Center. First serve on Friday is set for 7 pm (ET) and the Saturday's match begins at 3 pm (ET).
