ATHENS, Tenn. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team opened their 2024 campaign with a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 17).
The Pomeroys improved to 2-0 on the very young season while TWU fell to 0-2.
In the opening match, SMWC won the sets by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-19. In the second match of the day, the Pomeroys were victorious by scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-17.
Karla Melendez opened the season by the leading the Pomeroys with nine kills while
Tori Schopmeyer tallied eight and
Alex Hernandez added five.
Jocelyn Chavez and
Audrey Lee each posted a pair of service aces in the victory.
Evelyn Morales tallied a pair of blocks while
Dynaida Orta posted 15 set assists and Chavez led the way with 21 digs.
In the day's second match, SMWC posted a sparkling team hitting percentage of .330 and were led in kills by
Grace Geisler and
Isabel Hansen with seven each.
Lisanel Rodriguez came through with five kills in the victory.
Kanon Miyaki posted a pair of service aces while Hansen added a pair of blocks.
Lillian Breaux tallied 16 set assists and
Alondra Garcia Alicea posted 13 digs. Miyaki added 12 digs while Chavez was credited with 10.
Melandez led the way on the day with 14 total kills over the two-game stretch while Schopmeyer posted 10 kills on just 19 attempts -- a .368 hitting percentage.
The Pomeroys are back in action on Saturday, August 24 when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., for the Haskell Indiana Nations Tri-Match. They will face Haskell at 1:00 p.m. (ET) and will come back to play Mission University at 3 p.m. (ET).
On August 30 & 31, the Pomeroys will host the two-day Showdown at The Woods presented by the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau at the Knoerle Center in the home opening weekend.
