ST. LOUIS -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team remained undefeated with a 3-0 sweep on the road against the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Tuesday evening (25-20, 25-12, 25-11).
The Pomeroys are off to a perfect 10-0 start to the 2024 campaign while UHSP fell to 2-7.
Leading the way for SMWC was
Madison Hill who recorded nine kills in the contest.
Tori Schopmeyer added seven kills while
Alex Hernandez posted six.
Leishmarie Virella recorded four service aces in the victory. Holy Linville paced the Pomeroys with three total blocks while Virella added nine digs.
Lillian Breaux was credited with 17 set assists.
An early 7-1 run in the first set staked SMWC to an 8-3 advantage before UHSP eventually tied the contest at 12. Leading 23-20, Hernandez posted a kill and the Pomeroys took advantage of a UHSP attack error to win the first set 25-20.
UHSP raced out to a 6-3 edge in the second set, before the Pomeroys rattled off six points in a row capped by a kill from
Dynaida Orta for the 9-6 lead. SMWC would score the final four points of the set to win 25-12.
In the third set, SMWC scored five of the first six points to race to a 5-1 lead. A kill by Hill capped a 4-0 Pomeroy run and the lead ballooned to 9-2. A kill by Schopmeyer at the end of the set gave the Pomeroys a 25-11 victory and the sweep.
SMWC will travel to Marshall, Texas to take part in the Wiley Invitational on September 6 & 7. The event begins on Friday with matches against Wiley and Louisiana Christian at Noon and 4 pm (CT). On Saturday, SMWC will face off against John Melvin and Paul Quinn (8 & 10 am CT) to conclude play in the tournament.
