Brooklynn Jones Leads Pomeroys With 17 Points At Oakland City

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. -- Brooklynn Jones scored 17 points to lead three double-digit scorers but the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team fell 83-71 at Oakland City on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 11).

SMWC fell to 9-6, 2-2 River States Conference as they saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. The Pomeroys return to action on Tuesday, January 14 at 7:30 p.m. (ET) when they travel to IU-Kokomo.

Jones led the team with 17 points as she hit 8-of-12 shots from the field with four rebounds and a pair of steals. She was joined in double figures scoring by Diamond Bryant with 12 points and Iyre Gomez added 11 points and two pilfers.

The Pomeroys connected on 11 3-pointers in the game including three each from Abby Worley and Gomez. Samara Douglas posted seven rebounds in the game.

Gomez got the Pomeroys off to a quick start with a 3-pointer on the opening possession and Jones added a jumper for the 5-0 lead. The SMWC defense stood tall by not allowing a point in the opening five minutes of the game to the Mighty Oaks. An 8-0 run was countered by a triple from Worley as the first quarter ended in an 8-8 tie.

In the second quarter, the Pomeroys regained a one-point advantage when Gomez drilled a 3-pointer at the 7:55 mark for the 13-12 lead. The Mighty Oaks would twice take a five-point lead later in the stanza until Diamond Bryant connected on a triple with 2:22 to go before the half for the 27-26 lead. Oakland City would lead 29-27 at the break.

Jones 3-pointer midway through the third quarter cut the deficit down to a possession, but Oakland City was able to scrap together a 7-0 run for a 43-34 lead. Worley's 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the period sent the game to the fourth quarter with the Pomeroys trailing 56-45.

A Jones jumper with 3:47 remaining got SMWC within 69-61. That would be as close as the Pomeroys would get in the contest as they fell 83-71.
