SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team fought tough throughout their River States Conference matchup against visiting Midway (Ky.) by could not get a last second 3-pointer to fall in dropping a 67-65 decision in the Knoerle Center.
SMWC sees their record move to 9-8 on the season, including a 2-4 mark in RSC play. The Pomeroys will hit the road for a pair of conference contests beginning at West Virginia Tech on Thursday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
Diamond Bryant and
Brooklynn Jones each scored 14 points for the Pomeroys while
Samara Douglas added seven points and led the team with 10 rebounds.
Hot shooting from 3-point range carried the Pomeroys to an early lead in the game and finished the game by hitting 9-of-20 from distance (45 percent) paced by three by
Irye Gomez.
SMWC dominated the glass by a 42-34 margin and turned 18 offensive rebounds into 17 second chance points. They recorded 13 steals in the game and posted 17 points off turnovers. Douglas recorded four steals while Gomez and Bryant added three pilfers each.
A Gomez 3-pointer with 8:12 left in the opening stanza gave SMWC its first lead at 3-2. Jones drilled a corner three on the next possession to stretch the lead out to 6-2. A pair of
Madison Fueger free throws tied the game at 15 and
Kylee Stepp drained a 3-pointer near the end of the period for the 18-15 lead. The Pomeroys owned an 18-17 edge after the opening 10 minutes.
Bryant stretched the lead out to points on the opening possession of the second quarter with a 3-pointer before Gomez drilled another with 7:02 on the clock for the 25-20 cushion. Jones would answer a Midway trifecta with one of her own for a 28-23 lead at the quarter's midpoint. SMWC's largest lead of the first half came with 2:02 left before halftime on a
Destiny Thomas 3-pointer for the 31-24 advantage. The Pomeroys owned a 32-27 lead at the break.
Midway was able to battle back with eight of the first 10 points in the third quarter for a 34-33 advantage. Consecutive lay-ups by Fueger established a 38-35 cushion for the Pomeroys. Bryant's charity toss with 3:40 on the clock gave the Pomeroys a five-point lead but Midway countered with six in a row before Gomez drilled a 3-pointer with 1:58 remaining for the 47-45 lead. The two teams entered the final stanza tied at 49.
Trailing by four points, Jones would score on back-to-back possessions to once again knot the score at 57. Douglas scored inside to push the Pomeroys ahead but Midway punched back with a 3-pointer to move ahead 62-61 with 4:30 remaining.
Douglas drained a jumper with 1:56 remaining to trim the deficit down to just 66-65. The two teams played solid defense and the Pomeroys had two possessions in the final 15 seconds but came up empty to fall 67-65.
