Trey Powell, the son of head coach Blaine Powell, played quarterback for his father at Sullivan High School. Powell's career continued at Indiana State as part of the first recruiting class for head coach Curt Mallory. Powell converted from quarterback to wide receiver and then spent two years as an offensive graduate assistant coach.  
Powell racked up 7,313 passing yards and 80 touchdowns during a three-year run as the quarterback at Sullivan High School.  
"Coaching's all I ever wanted to do," Trey added. "I've been in love with football forever. The opportunity at ISU was an unbelievable experience. It's a staff that's been all over the country. I learned a lot of football. That's been extremely beneficial for me. I'm more than prepared to run an offense."
