Pomeroys Hold Off Principia with Win

Box Score

CLINTON, Ind. – Five Pomeroys scored in double-figures and SMWC held off a late charge by Principia College to win their fourth game of the season, 70-64 on Tuesday night.

In the first half, the Pomeroys and Panthers struggled to make shots early.  Midway through the half, the Pomeroys would begin to hit their shots and took an 18-8 advantage.   The Panthers would respond, going on a 9-0 run of their own and took the lead (23-20) minutes later.  With approximately 6 minutes to go in the half, Pomeroy guard Mikayla Metheny went down with an ankle injury and did not return to the game.  SMWC would continue to knock down shots for the remainder of the half and went into the locker room with a 43-36 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Pomeroys would never relinquish the lead.  SMWC kept Principia at bay for much of the half, leading by as many as 11 points (63-52) towards the latter stages of the game.  Things got interesting with less than five minutes to go as Principia would cut the lead down to three points.  However, a key three-point basket by Mikayla Kinneer with less than two minutes remaining put the Pomeroys up by six points.  It was enough as Principia was forced to foul and was unable to knock down shots to complete a comeback.

SMWC was led by Alaura McKemie who had a game-high 14 points.  She also picked up 6 steals on the night.  Also in double-figures were Hailee Rittinger (13 pts.), Chelsea Weaver (12 pts.), Ja'Breena Gardner (10 pts.), and Kennedy Nelson (10 pts.).  Gardner led the Pomeroys in rebounds (8) and steals (7).  Rittinger also had a game-high 4 blocks for SMWC.

Leading the way for Principia was Summer Switzer who scored 13 points for the Panthers.  Karina Olsen had a huge night under the basket for Principia as she secured a game-high 20 rebounds.

The Pomeroys are now 4-3 on the season and will play its cross-town rival Rose-Hulman on Wednesday, Dec. 4.  The game will be played on the campus of Rose-Hulman and is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
