Pomeroys Come Up Short Against Bearcats

Box Score

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College basketball team fell to Brescia on Thursday afternoon, 87-81.

Sophomore Kennedy Nelson led the way for SMWC, as she recorded her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were juniors Grace Ziegler and Shelby Parmer with 17 and 13 points, respectively. Parmer dished out five assists, while sophomore NaShaunda Rayford handed out four assists for the third time this season.

The first half saw the Pomeroys lead the Bearcats for the first five minutes. Brescia then got back into the mix and tightened up the score for the following five minutes, leading at times by a single possession. A pair of free throws by Rayford gave SMWC an eight point lead, their largest of the game, with 11:14 on the clock. The Bearcats then went on a 10-2 run to take the lead with 8:43 on the clock. The Bearcats never let go of the lead after that and went into the break up 41-37.

In the second half, the Pomeroys came out and scored early off a layup junior Sierra Lopez. The Bearcats then pulled away again, leading by as many as 12 in the first five minutes of the second half. The Pomeroys though refused to go away and cut Brescia's lead to two on several occasions. With 7:58 on the clock, the game was still very much in reach for SMWC as they trailed 73-66. The Pomeroys then made their last run at the lead with 3:54 on the clock, as a layup by senior Alaura McKemie cut Brescia's lead to 79-75.

With time running out, Brescia played keep away for the final three minutes and road out the 87-81 victory. The Pomeroys won the rebounding battle, 60-58, while shooting 37 percent (31-of-85) from the field, 28 percent (8-of-29) from 3-point range and 41 percent (11-of-27) from the free throw line. In comparison, Brescia shot 36 percent (30-of-83), 22 percent (4-o-18) and 85 percent (23-of-27).

The Pomeroys will be back in action on December 20, when they host IU-Southeast in a 2 p.m. tip. The game will be a rematch from SMWC's season-opener in which the Pomeroys fell 104-79. LIVE Video and Stats will be available at SMWCPOMEROYS.com.
