Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team fell to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the 21st edition of the Clabber Girl Classic, sponsored by Dorsett Automotive, on Wednesday. The Pomeroys move to 2-4 after falling to the Fightin' Engineers, 66-58.
The Pomeroys came into the game ranked first in the USCAA in points per game at 90.2, while RHIT came into the game ranked 11th in NCAA DIII in scoring defense, allowing their opponents to score just 47.6 points per game this season. Wednesday's game was the first time this season that SMWC had been held under 79 points.
Two players for SMWC managed double figures against a tough RHIT defense. Juniors Grace Ziegler and Sierra Lopez each notched 10 points. Lopez also led the Pomeroys on the glass with eight rebounds. Defensively, juniors Desiree Irizarry and Shelby Parmer led the way with five and six steals, respectively.
RHIT struck first followed by a quick Pomeroy response with a 3-pointer by S. Parmer. The score stayed tight throughout the first half with neither team gaining a double digit lead at any time. The Pomeroys led on several occasions with their final lead of the first half coming with 7:01 on the clock and 17-16 on the board in favor of the SMWC. RHIT then road out the remaining seven minutes and went into the break leading SMWC, 30-27.
RHIT came out in the second half ahead and kept it that way for the final 20 minutes. SMWC cut the RHIT lead to two with 18:27 on the clock. The Pomeroys then stayed close with the Fightin' Engineers down to the end before falling 66-58. The Pomeroys finished the game shooting 31 percent (21-of-68) from the field and 25 percent (7-of-28) from 3-point range. In comparison, RHIT finished shooting 34 percent (21-of-62) from the floor and 23 percent (3-of-13) from the 3-point range.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on December 6, when they head to Robert Morris-Peoria for a 3 p.m. start.
